Get
compliant now, or risk a stiff penalty- That's the law being
reviewed in Congress this session, pertaining to the
numerous trailers on the nation's highways. The Truck
Trailer Conspicuity ruling affects most trailer owners, and
may make it mandatory for all trailers over a certain length
and/or height to have the Department of Transportation
(D.O.T.)- certified conspicuity markings along sides and at
specific points on the top rear shoulders.
In
1993, the National Highway and Safety Administration (NHTSA)
announced a ruling on Truck Conspicuity. The ruling went
into effect December, 1993.
A
Summary of 1993 NHTSA Ruling:
•Applies
to new trailers with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds and a width of
80" and over.
•All
new trailers (excluding dwellings and offices) including
Garbage Haulers, Auto Transports,
Container
Chassis, Side-locking Beverage Trailers, Boat
Trailers.
•All
new conspicuity material must have a DOT certification
marked on the sheeting relating to its minimum
retroreflective white candlepower rating
The
law being reviewed now will make "conspicuity markings"
mandatory for all qualifying trailers, regardless of the
